On 23rd July the sixth and final Reinhold Messner Mountain Museum opened its doors in Kronplatz, South Tyrol.
The world famous explorer and mountaineer set out for great heights for his final project which sits at 2,275m and is the highest of the six. The museum also features a dramatic viewing platform jutting out from the mountain. Devoted to alpinism’s supreme discipline, MMM Corones was planned by architect Zaha Hadid, who is famous for powerful, curving forms.
The museum can be hiked to or reached by cable car. It is open daily in the summer from 10am to 4pm and in the winter its doors will be according to the opening times of the cable cars.
Wine lovers may choose to combine their visit with ‘Törggelen’, a century old custom where local farmhouses open their doors and offer the new, non-fermented wine of the season (Suser) from their vineyards and give out samples of speck, roasted chestnuts and traditional South Tyrol dishes. Hotel Goldener Adler in the Eisack Valley also offers up some great packages during Törggelen.
