Houlding begins attempt on Mirror Wall in Arctic Greenland

Mirror Wall (1 of 1)

Leo Houlding has started an attempt at a first ascent on the extremely remote Mirror Wall, a massive 1,200m high granite cliff in Arctic Greenland, an expedition which is sponsored by Berghaus.

Houlding is leading a small team that hopes to be the first to complete a line on the wall’s northwest face. Those sharing lead climbing duties are Joe Möhle, an experienced South African climber, and Matt Pickles, a talented sport climber from Todmorden. Adventure film-maker Matt Pycroft, along with experienced climber and rigging expert Waldo Etherington, will document the climb for a series of short films.

The team anticipates spending 15 days on the wall while they attempt to free climb to the summit. So far, they have experienced stable high pressure systems with rising temperatures, which has produced great rock climbing conditions but also poor and hazardous snow conditions on the glacial approach. Though signal is limited and contact with the team will be intermittent, updates on their progress will be posted on the Berghaus website or on Twitter via @TheRealBerghaus and @LeoHoulding.
