Join a trek to help beat breast cancer

Breast Cancer Now is looking for walkers and trekkers to join one of its UK or overseas charity treks to raise funds for breast cancer research. From the Thames Path to Ben Nevis, and the Great Wall Of China to Kilimanjaro, there’s an adventure to suit everyone.

Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer charity created by the merger of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, and they’re dedicated to funding research into the disease. Right now breast cancer is at a tipping point; more women are surviving, but more are being diagnosed than ever before. And every hour, another woman in the UK dies from the disease. By joining one of Breast Cancer Now’s charity challenges, you will be providing vital resources to help beat the disease.

Heather Wagner did just that last year when she powered through the Norfolk Trek to raise funds for breast cancer research after being diagnosed with breast cancer herself: “Back in 2007 I was diagnosed with DCIS which came as no surprise, as my mum and four of her sisters had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer. I underwent a lumpectomy and all was well for five years. However, instead of getting the all clear that I was expecting, I was told the devastating news that I had Stage 2 breast cancer’. With my family history of breast cancer and my own diagnosis as motivation, I looked into raising money for research into this horrible disease decided to do a trek to raise money for breast cancer research. It was also an excellent motive for regaining my fitness! During my first training walk I struggled to complete 3 miles, but through the challenging training sessions and the unwavering support of my family and friends, I powered through two 7 mile walks across the North Yorkshire moors the weekend before the big trek.”

“The day of the Norfolk Trek was nerve wracking and made me question my fitness. However, the phone calls of support and encouragement inspired me to continue putting one foot in front of the other. The whole trek was physically draining, but the overwhelming emotions I experienced upon completing the walk made it all the better. I made some fantastic new friends during the trek, and a number of us have already signed up for another one! All I hope for is that one day a cure will be found and I hope my little efforts help along the way.”
