Austrian climber Christian Stangl has become the first person to complete the Triple Seven Summits – a challenge requiring him to climb the three highest mountains on every continent.
The 47-year-old began seriously bagging peaks in 2008, and with the exception of Ojos del Salado, which he tackled back in 1996, all 21 summits were reached in a period of just over five years.
In addition to climbing the seven highest mountains in the world, Stangl summited the second seven summits including K2, Ojos del Salado, Logan, Dykh tau, Batian, Tyree and Sumantri. He also climbed the third highest mountains on all seven continents which are known to be Kangchenjunga, Pissis, Orizaba, Shkhara, Mawenzi, Shinn and Puncak Mandala.
Once completed, the climber was required to provide proof of summiting each peak in the form of a photograph, video or GPS log. A professional mountaineer for over a decade, Stangl’s other achievements include a sub 17-hour solo ascent of Everest without oxygen, a 15-hour ascent of Cho Oyu, and an ascent of Aconcagua from base camp in less than four and a half hours.
