The disappearance of Mallory and Irvine close to the summit of Mount Everest in June 1924 is perhaps the most romantic and the greatest unsolved mountaineering mystery. The discovery of Mallory’s body in 1999 answered none of these questions but it excited speculation and enthralled a new generation.
This beautifully illustrated talk by Julie Summers, Irvine’s great niece and biographer, brings to life one of the most enthralling stories linked to Mount Everest. Set in the Edwardian era, when the conquest of the mountain represented the last, great challenge of exploration after both the poles had been discovered, it evokes the mood of the early twentieth century and of British climbing at the time of the First World War.
Sandy Allen
In 2013 Sandy Allen made an extraordinary new ascent of 8125m Nanga Parbat, the 9th highest mountain in the world by the 13KM long Mazeno Ridge.
The climb took 18 days and the team crossed 7 peaks over 7000m along the way. After 13 days they ran out of food and most opted to descend. Sandy and his partner continued spending 3 days without water. It was an astonishing exercise in human endurance and determination by two men in their 50s – one of the most remarkable Himalayan climbs ever. Listen as Sandy recalls the story – the challenges and the thoughts that were driving him on.
